The shift whistle told you what time it was without looking at a clock.
You could smell Provenzano's doughnuts from the sidewalk and watch them drop into the oil through the window.
Your cone at Mooney's started dripping before you got to the car. Your mother had napkins ready. She always had napkins ready.
You saw the neon rabbit from the bridge and knew you were almost home.
More bulbs were burned out than shining at Diamond #3 and nobody cared because you could see enough.
You fell on the ice at Hoyt Park, your knees were wet the rest of the night, and you didn't go inside because going inside meant it was over.
Sullivan's on Fridays was not optional. Your father picked up the fish dinners and the whole car smelled like it and nobody complained.
Half the town punched in at the Steering Gear and the other half was married to someone who did.

You went to the Twilight and half the time you didn't even know what was playing. You went because that's what you did on a summer night. The sound carried three blocks if the wind was right.
